An account fo school life written in ink by Diana Hope Kilby when she was at St Mary's School, Wantage. The diary runs from January 1 to 23 September 1928, with one or two breaks, including a two week spell when she had measles. Written neatly in ink, about 9 lines per day. Full of schoolgirl charm. She is sometimes "rather sick of life" The Dr who treats her for measles is "an inspired idiot" and the food is "filthy, sloppy, getting distinctly hungry". "Greek was too awful for words." Another time, "a fearful row on, whole form in Coventry," and, "We had to make a public apology to the school at break," She hopped out of gym but "Ford brought us back, in an absolute fury." She plays 'la-x', cricket, netball and thinks "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd" is a great read. A list at the front of the diary is her note of what to put in her suitcase for school. Written in a Timothy White and Co. "Diary and Notebook for 1928". Approx A5 size. The writer appears to have been 16, or thereabouts, when she kept the journal. Very Good Condition. Bill Shine (Film Actor) School Exercise Books
Four school exercise books from William Shine's schooldays. Grubby, ink stained, well worn and scribbled in. (He is marked 2 out of 10 for one essay -- "More work must be attempted.”) From Gordon Square High School. I have been unable to date, but probably 1924-5. (Shine says he was born in 1911 and is now 13). One essay gives an account of his life so far "A young author wrote a play and my dad produed it and took all round the country." The schoolboy 's ambition is obvious. "When I am about fifteen or sixteen I should like to go on the stage like my farther. I shall be a light comedian." Elsewhere - does he prefer the theatre or pictures? "I prefer the theatre, naturally, because my mother and father are both on the stage. I have been on five times, once in a play and four times in pantomime." A unique lot of British film/theatre history. £765.00
